Goals and
Vision
Our vision is to
provide all pregnant smokers (and new mothers) with the help they
want and the support they need to quit smoking and stay
tobacco-free. We will achieve this by translating science-based
interventions into effective programs and policies. This will
entail:

-
Ensuring that
systems are in place to screen all pregnant woman for tobacco use,
and that all pregnant and postpartum smokers receive best-practice
cessation counseling by 2005.
-
Effectively using
the media to promote the benefits of smoking cessation for pregnant
smokers, and to show their partners, families, friends, and
neighbors how to assist them in their quit attempts.
-
Making smoking
cessation services and support widely available in communities and
workplaces to encourage pregnant women to quit and support them in
their efforts to do so.
-
Promoting policies
that support smoke-free environments and improved access to
cessation treatments, and encouraging economic support for such
policies.
-
Promoting research
and evaluation efforts to develop more effective cessation
interventions.
Our goals for the National
Partnership are:
- To ensure that all pregnant women
in the United States will be screened for tobacco use, and that all
pregnant and postpartum smokers will receive best-practice
cessation counseling as part of their usual care by 2005.
- To reduce the prevalence of
smoking during pregnancy to two percent or less by 2010, in
accordance with the Healthy People 2010 goal.
