Mini-Grant Projects

The purpose of the mini-grants are to provide a mechanism for organizations with experience in prenatal smoking cessation to share their models and lessons learned with other agencies. The products will incorporate examples of office systems changes and improvement strategies to enhance provider capacity to deliver the “5 A’s”.

Mini-Grant #1: The Partnership for Smoke-Free Families Program (PSF) has created a technical assistance manual for healthcare organizations considering the implementation of pregnancy-specific guidelines for smoking cessation. The manual outlines the development and implementation of PSF, a collaborative effort among three large health care systems in San Diego, California. PSF is focused on smoking cessation for pregnant women and the reduction of environmental tobacco smoke exposure among infants and young children. The manual contains valuable lessons learned, recommendations for program implementation, and samples of program materials. It is designed to provide other organizations with the information they need to create similar programs in their own unique health care settings. You can download the manual's executive summary and full interior text in pdf format.

Mini-Grant #2: Brandeis University
Brandeis University is creating a planning guide for OB/GYN practice sites to develop an office-based system of care for treating tobacco use and dependence. The planning guide includes a self-assessment tool, guidelines for establishing internal and external smoking cessation resources, and recommended counseling steps. The guide was piloted in private prenatal care provider practices in Vermont, and is now available for download.
